Dr Tan obtained his medical degree from the University of Sheffield (UK) in 1997. He completed his training in internal medicine and became a member of the Royal College of Physician in 2002. Dr Tan subsequently underwent his training in general cardiology at the National Heart Centre Singapore and obtained his full registration as a Certified Cardiologist with the Singapore Medical Council in 2006.

Dr Tan received the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) award, and the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) award between 2008 and 2010 to pursue subspecialty training in Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland (USA). During his training there, he participated in the Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia/Cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) program, culminating is several peer-reviewed publications which helped in our understanding of this genetic disorder (a leading cause of sudden cardiac death among young athletes).

On his return to National Heart Centre Singapore, he continued to hone his skills in Electrophysiology and Pacing, specializing in the management of complex atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, novel ablative techniques, as well as in Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIED), with a keen interest in Conduction System Pacing (CSP), Cardiac Implantable Defibrillators and Cardiac Resynchronization therapy.

Dr Tan was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. He was active in training the next generation of Cardiologists in Singapore and was appointed as a Core Clinical Faculty Member in the Cardiology Senior Residency Program. He was also the Chairman of the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) of the Cardiology Senior Residency Program, responsible for the monitoring and improving of the Cardiology Senior Residency Program in National Heart Centre Singapore. On a national level, Dr Tan was appointed as the Chairman of the Cardiology Senior Residency Training Exit Exam Committee under the auspices of the Joint Committee of Specialist Training, Singapore. In this role, he tirelessly writes for the biannual professional Cardiology Exit Exams (a pre-requisite for all trainee Cardiologist before accreditation). In recognition of his contribution to education, Dr Tan was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award (Medical Education) SingHealth Residency in 2014-2015, and again in 2015-2016.

Dr Tan is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS) as well as a Certified Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS-A) with the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE), an international organization that provides certification in cardiac rhythm device therapy, cardiac remote monitoring, and cardiac electrophysiology. He is a Test Writing Committee member for the Certified Electrophysiology Specialist exams (IBHRE), and actively contributes to the international accreditation of electrophysiologists who participate in the CEPS-A.

For more than 20 years of service in public health, Dr Tan has served his patients with dedication and compassion. In recognition of his selfless contribution, he was awarded multiple National Heart Centre Singapore Service Quality Awards (1 Bronze, 2 Silver and 2 Gold), as well as the Singapore Health Quality Service Gold Award in 2022.
